Review: Only One by Tammy Falkner (Reed Brothers #5.5)
The last time Carrie saw Nick was three summers ago and now she finds herself returning to the beach house she and her family once loved to spend one last summer with her estranged mom who is dying of cancer. Carrie refuses to forgive her mom for abandoning their family and not even the knowledge that she has cancer softens Carrie's stance. But then Nick knows what it's like to lose your parents. Can he help open Carrie's heart to forgiveness and inspire her to grab hold of the moments she has left with her mom?
Only One is the fourth novella and the tenth release in the Reed Brothers series by Tammy Falkner and while the story is focused on Nick, Carrie, and Carrie's family, the entire Reed clan is very much present and do play important roles. There are also a couple of life-changing tidbits about two of the Reed couples that are revealed here, so it's definitely a novella that shouldn't be skipped if you're an avid fan of the series. There's also an interesting side story between Nick's best friends, Jack and Malone, that I hope will be explored in a future novella, because there's obviously something more than friendship going on there.
Carrie's story is a tearjerker, especially since it involves a mother who knows that she doesn't have very much time left and wants to spend her final days with the daughter she hasn't seen in three years. The anger Carrie feels is perfectly understandable, but with a lot of things that involve family, not everything is as clear-cut as it may seem. And then you've got Nick, who has experienced his own loss and makes do with the life that he has even though he has the potential to be so much more. Only One is a tale of family, forgiveness, redemption, hope, and first loves and can be read well as a standalone. This gets five stars. ♥
