Review: Come Away with Me by Erika Kelly (Calamity Falls #6.5)

Note: An advanced reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author via Give Me Books Promotions.

Come Away with Me may be the shortest read in the Calamity Falls series, but it doesn't lack anything in terms of story and character development. This is also my favorite book post-Bowie brothers--those first four novels, which originally made up the Bad Boyfriend series, are my top reads from Erika Kelly--and that's saying something because those were huge shoes to fill. This holiday story features a single mother who's jaded when it comes to men (not counting her son and immediate family) and a gifted artist who's had feelings for her for a while but may have finally moved on after one rejection too many.

When her boyfriend of five years abandoned her and their unborn child, Skylar James learned a painful lesson. Now twenty-five, Skylar's world is all about her four-year-old son, Rocco, and building her image consulting business. She has her family as her support system, but she's learned to rely on herself. She doesn't have much time for anything else, so saying "no" to Jackson "Jinx" Costello every single time he tried to ask her out was automatic for her. When she agrees to help his mom with a makeover, she lets her guard down and gets to know Jinx better. But now that she may be ready to date, is she too late considering he's currently in a relationship with a woman who may be perfect for him?

Thinking back, I couldn't recall either Jinx or Skylar in any of the previous releases, but the author does mention Jinx being in Just the Way You Are, which is the fourth book in the series, so I shall take her word for it (because obviously, Erika Kelly knows better!). While it took a bit for me to warm up to Skylar, I did like who much of a devoted mom she was to Rocco and how determined she was to provide a good life for both of them. Jinx was a really good guy, although the way he handled the thing with Lori gave me pause for a second or two. Overall, Come Away with Me an endearing 4.5-starred novella.
