Review: Love at First Fight by Carrie Aarons

Note: An advanced reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author.

Love at First Fight is an enemies-to-lovers standalone romance from Carrie Aarons, and it's all about a twenty-nine-year-old fifth grade teacher and the thirty-one-year-old restaurateur who hates her. Molly Archer thought she had the sort of relationship that was headed towards a deeper commitment, but all it took was one text message from him informing her that he was on his way to Singapore for work and summarily breaking up with her in the process. Four months later, she's at the Hamptons with her best friend and her five of her ex's closest friends. This was a vacation that had been pre-planned, and one that she considered backing out of until her best friend encouraged her to push through and simply enjoy some time away. Unfortunately, being stuck in one house with Smith Redfield, aka her ex's best friend, may make relaxing difficult. In all the time she's known him, he's been nothing but hostile towards her, so what makes her think he'll be different now? She may just be surprised once she gets to know the real Smith Redfield.

When it comes to enemies-to-lovers romances, tension between the main characters is a MUST and it needs to be presented well by the author. Well, consider both those things checked off the list. Carrie Aarons brings on the tension between Molly and Smith, and trying to see how their relationship would shift from somewhat hostile to actually more receptive and even friendly was part of what it interesting. I admit, however, that Smith's treatment of Molly in the beginning made it difficult for me to see him as someone I'd consider worthy of her. It reminded me of the whole bully romance trope but for MCs in their early thirties. Molly being as understanding and forgiving as she is doesn't equate to a bad thing, but there is such a thing as being too nice, and too much of anything isn't good. However, when these two were together, I was cheering them on, and I admit that Smith did ultimately redeem himself. All their closest friends--not including Molly's ex, of course--were totally my favorite thing about this book. Four stars for Love at First Fight.
