Review: Sweet Revenge by Jennifer Hanks (Sinners MC #1)
Note: An advanced reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author via Give Me Books Promotions.
Jennifer Hanks is a new-to-me author and her Sinners MC series starter is both my introduction to her writing and to this world comprised of the members of a motorcycle club and how they protect their brotherhood and find love along the way. Sweet Revenge is book one and it's the story of Maggie O'Brien and Ryker "Gunner" Evans. Maggie knows what it's like to experience loss and then to have to live with mistakes that you've made. Now, she's trying desperately to leave those mistakes behind and reaches out to the Sinners MC for help. The club's vice-president knows wanting to get closer to Maggie is wrong. Not only would Gunner's plan for vengeance against the club's number one threat be put in jeopardy, but he could be setting himself up for heartbreak. After all, Maggie is wary of him and refuses to fall into the same trap she did before. Will she be able to open herself up and realize that Gunner is nothing like the man who tormented her or will the shackles of the past keep her from trying again?
I love it when an author is able to not just catch my attention but capture my heart, and when it happens to be my first read from them, well, color me happily impressed. It's been mentioned in other reviews that this series is a spin-off of Jennifer Hanks's Dimarco series, what with the Maggie being introduced there as well as the club. I've added those books to my to-be-read list, but I'd like to note that this new book can be read independently of the previous ones, so if you're like me and you're new to the author, you won't feel lost at all. Hanks did a fantastic job weaving together this story about love and revenge, with a strong cast of characters led by Maggie and Gunner. I appreciate that she was able to add her own original touches to a well-loved trope. I was drawn to everything that the book had to offer, and couldn't help but cheer Maggie and Gunner on as they battled their way through Maggie's past and the impending threats towards both of them and the club. I was fully invested in these two in particular and with the club in general. With writing as sharp and on-point as Hanks's, it was impossible for me not to fall in love with this book. Sweet Revenge gets five stars, and I look forward to reading more from this fab series. ♥
