Review: When Sparks Fly by J.A. Essen (First Responders #1)

When Sparks Fly is the first book in author J.A. Essen's First Responders series and it's a contemporary romance about a graduating college student slash teacher pursuing her degree in education and a firefighter slash paramedic with the Santa Barbara Fire Department. Macy Hart is in her early twenties and has been crushing on the hunky firefighter she spotted while out for a run. Now, she's changed her route in order to make sure she passes by his fire station and gets a glimpse of him on a daily basis. During one particular run, she falls for him...literally! This opens the door for Macy to get to know Seth Avery, and when she learns his secrets, she's in for one hell of a surprise. Are the sparks that have been flying between them be enough or will could they fizzle out?

There were elements about this book that I found interesting when I look at them as separate entities, but put all together in one story, it just felt disconnected. Or maybe it's because the twists in the story were so abruptly thrown at me that I felt as if they were there for shock value more than anything else. Macy and Seth had this good connection from the beginning, but then something happens and then she catches him doing something else and I was like "Huh?" since that makes me question what it was he was really after. Then another twist happens and he's affected by it and there isn't really a firm resolution, so again, it didn't have this seamless flow to it. Because of all the stuff thrown into the mix, I wasn't sure if theirs was a love or lust match. I'm giving When Sparks Fly three stars. ♥
