“You're cute when you're flustered.” His eyes are hooded and lazy. He looks so relaxed and happy, and I love that I'm the one who helped him get there. He straightens, and I grin.
“Don't worry. With our track record, I'll be argumentative and surly soon enough,” I say.

I loved, loved, LOVED this book! Work in Progress is the first in bestselling author BJ Harvey's new Cook Brothers series and it's my favorite read from her to date. This had the top two musts for a romantic comedy: humor and heart. However, it doesn't stop there; Harvey comedy both witty and jocular, and it shows that she doesn't underestimate her readers or what they would find as humorous. She's also successfully ensured that her main characters have that much needed chemistry and connection but there isn't a mad rush to sex, allowing readers to get to know the characters first and to want to become emotionally invested in them. The trip to the happily-ever-after marinates--yep, I was reading this while cooking AND eating--quite nicely, making for a superbly scrumptious--clearly the whole food theme continues here--rom-com that has me declaring this one 2019 favorite.

Work in Progress is the story of thirty-five-year-old (total guesswork on my part but since his best friend is that age, I'm going with it) former member of the Coast Guard and tour boat captain turned house flipper Jamie John Cook and thirty-one-year-old single mother and nurse April Rose Williams, or simply known as Jamie and April. These next-door neighbors have their first meeting by way of April barging into the house Jamie is flipping in order to complain about the noise and finds him with a cut to his hand. She immediately pegs him as an irresponsible guy who drinks too much without a care for others. So what if he's a gorgeous hottie that makes her curious how good he is with his hands? Then little by little, April begins to realize that maybe her first impression of Jamie was all wrong because not only is Jamie proving to be great with her six-year-old, Axel, but he's pretty great with her, too. When Jamie's done at the end of three months, will have move on to his next fixer upper or has he found his home with the sassy April and her irrepressible son, and will April even want forever with a work in progress like Jamie?

There was just something beyond the usual with this new novel from BJ Harvey. I wish I could mention one thing that made it stand out among all the other new releases this week, but it wasn't merely one thing. Heck, it was the book as a whole. From this fantastic story about a man following his dream of flipping houses by flipping his own life around with the love and support of his parents, siblings, and closest friends and a woman who's central family unit may not be the norm but it's the one that not only works for her but is the one that's kept her sane and secure while raising her son to Harvey's writing itself and her ability to weave a tale worth telling AND reading, this Cook Brothers series starter simply hit all my bullet points and then some on what makes a memorable romance read. Work in Progress has left its mark on me, and whether you're a longtime BJ Harvey reader or are new to her writing or are simply a lover of rom-coms, I happily encourage you to read this as soon as you can. Five-plus stars. ♥
