Review: XV (Fifteen) by Lana Sky (War of Roses #1)

Note: An advanced reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author via Give Me Books Promotions.

It was only recently that I discovered Lana Sky's writing by way of her Savage Fall duet, so saying yes to reading and reviewing the first novel in her brand-new trilogy was a no-brainer. I already know what she's capable of, even though the second book in her previous duology fell short of my very high expectations thanks to a strong opening salvo. The blurb for XV (Fifteen) had me intrigued but the story that was waiting for me absolutely blew me away.

The author kicks of her War of Roses series with one heck of a twisty tale! If you're familiar with Lana Sky's books, then you know she tends to write darker fare. Yes, the romance is still present, but if you're looking for a happily-ever-after neatly tied with a huge bow on top, I suggest you look elsewhere. The male main character here is no dashing hero. Mischa Stepanov is a hard man you may very well hate, but you'll love every single second doing it.

Ellen Winthrop's only crime is that she looks too much like her half-sister, but Mischa is a man on a mission and she's meant to be the fifteenth victim in a blood feud that's cost too many lives and too much of everything else in between. She refuses to sit idly by and play nothing more than the hapless victim to the monster everyone sees. She must dig deeper and uncover the man beneath the madness and mayhem, but will she survive what she finds?

Stories like these are difficult for me to review mainly because I have to keep stopping myself from divulging more than necessary. I don't want to spoil it for anyone out there who has yet to read the book, and trust me, if you're not the type to shy away from dark romances, you're going to want to get your hands on XV (Fifteen). This does end in a cliffhanger and there are two books to follow. Expectations? Well, consider them astronomical. Five stars. ♥
