Review: The Good, the Bad, and the Vampire by Sara Humphreys (Dead in the City #4)

Her voice broke with emotion and tears glittered in her eyes. "And they  are the same hands that have cradled the broken pieces of my heart, even when I pushed you away."


One of my favorite paranormal romance series, Dead in the City, is back with it's fourth installment and Sara Humphreys has certainly amped everything up a notch with The Good, the Bad, and the Vampire! With lots of snark and sass plus a good amount of love and lust mixed in with the action, vampire sentry Dakota Shelton, who was introduced in the second book, Vampire Trouble, and vampire bartender Trixie La Roux, who has been with the series since the beginning, have a story that's both engaging and intriguing. Dakota appears to be the laidback Texan but he's one of the best at his job and has no qualms taking down anyone who endangers the Presidium and the coven. On the other hand, Trixie is fierce and fiesty, but beneath her tough exterior lies unpleasant memories of how she was when she was still human.

Both Dakota and Trixie have their share of secrets that they would rather keep than share with everyone else. The attraction they've had from the first time they met has been limited to nothing more than innocent flirting but these two appear to need a bit of a nudge, and when it comes, it's from an unexpected source. It's almost as if everyone else can see how they're destined to be together except the two of them! Being bloodmates, however, takes a backseat to both of their pasts catching up with them, and they'll have to work together in order to save an innocent life. It's this joint mission that they're on that had me quite excited, because what's going on is much deeper and more complicated than either of them, or anyone else back in New York, could have ever anticipated. Piecing the puzzle could cost them their eternity together.

The Dead in the City series has been consistently exemplary, and Sara Humphreys's writing never fails to present a story that's worth sinking your teeth into (pun intended). She's also put together a cast of characters that you want to pair off, one at a time, and then read all about their happily-ever-afters. There's always humor and heat, but don't doubt that there's also drama, action, and heart, because these vampires are far from boring and are so not the norm. This was an ten-month wait but it was so worth it because the author added something new and unexpected. I'm willing to wait for Suzie and Damien's story (because yes, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they're up next) since The Good, the Bad, and the Vampire has satisfied my need...for now. I'm giving book four in the Dead in the City series five-plus stars. ♥
