Review: Outside the Lines by Lisa Desrochers (On the Run #1)

Note: This ARC was provided by Berkley Publishing Group via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I've read several mafia romances before, but I think this is the first one that begins with the children belonging to the largest mafia family in Chicago ending up with the Witness Security Program of the federal government or WITSEC. Outside the Lines introduces readers to the Delgado siblings--Robert, Lee, Ulie, Grant, and Sherm--whose lives as they knew it are changed for an undetermined amount of time when they're moved to Port St. Mary in Florida. This is the first novel in the On the Run series and is my first Lisa Desrochers read. I'm guessing that the series will be about the Delgado siblings, but with Sherm being as young as he is--he's nine--it's possible that it'll only be about the four older ones, who are all in their twenties (Rob's twenty-five, Lee's twenty-three, and fraternal twins Ulie and Grant are twenty-one).

Book one is about Rob Delgado, whose last name, along with those of his four younger siblings, has been changed to Davidson. With their father in prison, Rob was supposed to take over the "family business", but a change in power offers up an opportunity for wannabes to usurp. There's a hit out on the Delgado children, and Rob needs to find out who's behind it and there are certainly a select number of suspects on his list, with the possibilities ranging from their sworn enemies, the Savaco family, and those within their own organization who are greedy and power-hungry. Rob needs to protect sisters and brothers, and to him, that means trying to learn who wanted them dead and getting revenge on the audacity of said person. He's got his basic plan in place, but he's quickly distracted once he meets Sherm's teacher: Adriana Wilson.

Adri and Rob's romance takes a good long while before anything significant really happens. Think of it as super extended foreplay. Then, when they're finally giving in to their desires, everything is pushed fast forward. While I wasn't too thrilled with how long it took before things kicked into high gear, I did like reading about the dynamics within the Delgado (aka Davidson) set of siblings. Each one has a role to play, and the older ones are highly protective of their youngest. The situation they find themselves in isn't an easy one, and there's a hell of a lot of adjustment that they're forced to go through, but the struggles and triumphs were probably my favorite thing about this story. Not all the issues are resolved in this series starter, and I look forward to getting a few more answers in book two. Four stars go to Outside the Lines.
