Review: Hard to Break by Bella Jewel (Alpha's Heart #2)

Note: This ARC was provided by St. Martin's Press in exchange for an honest review.

Quinn Peterson is a mechanic and a damn good one, learning from her father and spending her life in their family-owned garage. She loved her life, but when her mother dies of cancer and her father wallows in alcohol, she's forced to take over to make sure the garage stays open and that they've got a roof over their heads. Unfortunately, the debts have gotten way out of control and renowned custom car builder Tazen Watts shows up to inform that he intends to buy the garage and make it the latest location for his own garage. She's heartbroken when the deal pushes through, but while she may hate what Tazen's done, she knows she also needs an income. They get on each other's nerves, but there's also an attraction that's existed from the very beginning. If they gave it a fair chance, their team-up would be a hard one to break.

Hard to Break is the second book in the Bella Jewel-penned Alpha's Heart contemporary romance series. This can be read as a standalone and doesn't tie in with the first book, Hard to Fight. Admittedly, it took a good while for me to feel any sort of affection for the lead characters, Tazen Watts and Quinn Peterson. These two acted immaturely more times than I could count and I found myself not as invested in their being a couple as much as I wanted to. But here's the thing: at one point in the story, my feelings started to shift and I began to see both Tazen and Quinn in a whole new light. They were no longer irritating once they decided to set aside their juvenile behavior and act like adults and act on their attraction. It was no longer about trying to make one another look like a fool and became about something more meaningful.

Quinn's struggles with her alcoholic father were an important part of the overall story and when the realization that how she's been handling his addiction wasn't helping him, the whole thing became a bit heartbreaking. The fact that Tazen plays a vital role in that situation later on was commendable because it was just more proof that the guy wasn't as much of a jerk as he appeared to be for the first half of the book. I like that these two grew on me and that reading about them made me change my mind about them. They weren't particularly endearing in the beginning, but they learned the necessary lessons to help them become better people and that they actually were quite perfect together. Admittedly, book one, Hard to Fight, is my favorite in the series, but Hard to Break was an overall good read and I'm giving it four stars. ♥
