Review: Addicted to Sin by Monica James (Sinful Pleasures #1)

I’m drowning in two women who are both toxic to my health for entirely different reasons, but toxic nonetheless.
Dixon Mathews is a therapist that specializes in addiction and he's the best at his job. He's also a manwhore who crosses ethical boundaries that could have his medical license revoked if ever his usually one-off sexual encounters with patients come to light. He makes no apologies for what he's become ever since he learned his fiancée was sleeping with one of his best friends and became pregnant. He works hard and plays even harder, but then he meets two very different women who beguile him in ways not even the woman he believed was the love of his life could. Juliet Harte is a patient addicted to sex and she's proving to be addicted to sex in Dixon in particular, while Madison Roberts is sweet and innocent. Both are more than what they seem, and by the time he discovers all of their dirty little secrets, Dixon will be in too deep.
I've read books wherein I found myself not having much love for one or both of the lead characters, making it difficult for me to become emotionally invested in them. Dixon Mathews, who is the main character in author Monica James's Addicted to Sin, the series starter of the contemporary erotic romance Sinful Pleasures, is an anti-hero of sorts, but his being a protagonist slash antagonist holds a certain undeniable appeal. He knows he's a jackass when it comes to his sexual trysts with women and his acknowledgment and often torn feelings about what he does--which usually entail his libido dealing with unpreventable desire in the beginning only to be left with emptiness and self-loathing afterwards--has him as an outwardly cocky and intelligent man masking a loneliness that demands empathy from the readers.
Dixon makes choices that will come back to haunt him and while I understand the man, I can't help but feel that he deserves the karma he's forced to face. Yes, the karma he's about to receive is more than warranted, but I can't help but feel for the guy and hope that while he learns his lesson, he also gets his happily-ever-after. Dixon is, after all, a complicated man; he's an insatiable sex machine when he's with Juliet and the caring romantic when he's with Madison. So, will the real Dixon Di Matteo, otherwise known as Dr. Dixon Mathews, please stand up? In my opinion, he's both and denying one leads to him denying who he really is. He isn't evil nor would I label him as callous or conniving, but he does make mistakes repeatedly, at times knowing that what he's doing is wrong, and it appears that this is his own addiction.
Monica James displays a wicked brilliance in weaving a story that doesn't merely entertain but hooks a reader from the get-go and makes sure that they hang on for the roller coaster fictional ride that will leave them buckled in for more. Here you've got a cast of characters that are flawed but even with their imperfections, either in hiding or on full display, you're drawn to them. The writing is top-notch and you're going to want to add the sequel, Driven to Sin, to your to-be-read list as soon as you finish its predecessor. This has enough drama, humor, sex, and romance to whet your appetite, plus twists you may or may not see coming, but what a dilemma it leaves dear Dixon with. If there was ever a time to give in to a book addiction, it would be once Addicted to Sin waits for you on your favorite e-reader. Five-plus stars! ♥
