Review: Obscured by Tara Sue Me

Note: This ARC was provided by RockStar Lit PR in exchange for an honest review.

Athena Hamilton has been a hooker since she was sixteen. A decade spent bowing down to the sadistic behavior of the man she believed would be her savior but turned out to be her tormentor, Athena would like nothing more than to escape her hellish life. Two very different men present her with seemingly different avenues toward freedom. Choosing one man over the other makes the most sense, but if it's one painful lesson that Athena has learned repeatedly the past ten years, it's to never fully trust any individual.

Obscured is a book written by bestselling author Tara Sue Me using the pseudonym Cat Waters and one that I would classify under the romantic suspense genre. The fact that there are unresolved issues and that it does end in a cliffhanger give greater credence to my theory that this is just the first in a series, because if it isn't that Tara Sue Me is evil for leaving us with that cliffy! The blurb alone had me hooked but the story so didn't go where I thought it was going a couple of times and I'm always one for surprises in books.

Athena Hamilton is a heroine that doesn't make excuses for her mistakes and misjudgments, owning up to them and simply explaining the circumstances surrounding her choices and decisions. Her strength and confidence wavers at times, but there's no doubting that she wants better for herself and while leaving her life may seem like a lofty goal, she adjusted to her new life at sixteen and learned to survive. Men want her for her body and the fantasy she provides but all she wants is to be seen as a person and not a commodity.

Aside from Athena, this story has a pretty strong case of supporting characters, two of whom are much more than they may seem. Of course, I'm not going to go into details because then that spoils the whole thing for those who haven't read the book yet. Suffice it to say that old adage of never judging a book by its cover rings true here. This was a book that surprised the heck out of me and I'm looking forward to the sequel to see what life has in store for Athena and the other characters of Obscured. This gets 4.5 stars. ♥
