Review: Darker the Release by Claire Kent (Revenge #2)
Note: This ARC was provided by Random House Publishing Group - Loveswept in exchange for an honest review.
When Kelly Watson decided to get as close to Caleb Marshall as possible, she had only one goal in mind: find evidence pinning him as the man behind her father's murder. But weeks into her plan, everything has become muddled. Sex with Caleb was supposed to be nothing more than a means to an end, but both their feelings have evolved into much more than either one of them ever thought possible, and now, Kelly finds herself hoping that Caleb isn't guilty of what her mother is accusing him of. At this point, Kelly doesn't know what will be more difficult to live with: the knowledge that the man she loves is the one who took her father away from her or that the man who loves her is the same man whose trust she's used against him.
Darker the Release is the sequel to Sweet the Sin, both part of the Revenge series from author Claire Kent and this picks up right after the events in the first book. Just like before, Kelly Watson and Caleb Marshall have sex...a LOT of sex, but then that's to be expected because it was and continues to be such an important facet to what has now become a committed relationship between the two. What was once purely physical has evolved into something that involves feelings, meaning Kelly has a heck of a lot more to lose. The thing is, whether Caleb is guilty or not, the final outcome appears to have Kelly all alone because of all the deceit that she's had to employ. And Caleb will either lose his freedom or reject the woman he loves.
I found myself enjoying this sequel a tad more than its predecessor, though I still wasn't too much of a fan of Kelly's and I couldn't help but feel bad for Caleb, who was an intelligent man that seemed to have turned into somewhat of a lovesick sap because of Kelly. Just when I was empathizing with Kelly's being torn, she does a couple of things that ticked me off and made me think less of her. Between the two of them, I felt that Caleb was the one who was more in love with Kelly. Then there was the whole blame game, one that I believed Kelly should have carried the heavier burden of. All in all, I did like how everything was finally resolved and I'm giving Darker the Release four stars, due in large part to Caleb. ♥
