Review: Danger Zone by Brooke Blaine & Ella Frank (The Elite #1)

Note: An advanced reader copy (ARC) was provided by the authors.

“You make a mess of me, you know that? My composure, my concentration—you make me forget myself, and that's... dangerous.”

The formidable writing duo of Brooke Blaine and Ella Frank are back with a new series, and they're switching gears from rock stars to navy pilots. Danger Zone is the first in their trilogy titled The Elite, and readers are introduced to twenty-six-year-old Grant Hughes, call sign: Panther, and twenty-five-year-old Matteo Morgan, call sign: Solo. The former is known for his discipline and no-nonsense attitude and has a lot to live up to, but that's what happens when you're the son of a legendary fighter pilot; the latter has a reputation for being reckless and flying by the seat of his pants, yet there's no denying just how gifted of a pilot he is. Both Panther and Solo are accepted into the Naval Aviation Fighter Academy--aka NAFTA--and are acknowledged as being the two to beat. They're gunning for each other, but the desire to be top gun is only matched by the desire they have for one another--a desire that Panther cannot allow himself to act on, but Solo's already set his sights on him and intends to get what he wants.

Like many others, I had Kenny Loggins's song from the Top Gun soundtrack playing in my head while reading this, and just like the song, this was fast-paced, with an intensity and tension to it that I could feel thrumming through my veins. This is only the first book, and yes, it does end with a cliffhanger--and I'm talking about the sort of cliffhanger that had my mouth dropping open in shock. Naturally, we don't get to fully know Grant's and Matteo's back stories as well as their current story as rivals and lovers, but what we do get isn't merely whetting the reader's appetite, but giving us enough to satisfy for the meantime while salivating for more. AND I NEED MORE, DAMN IT! Book two, Need for Speed, is due for release on April 27. Let the countdown begin! Five-plus stars for Danger Zone. ♥
