Review: Crazy Heifer by Lani Lynn Vale (The Valentine Boys #2)
Note: An advanced reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author via Wildfire Marketing Solutions.
Crazy Heifer is the second book in Lani Lynn Vale's Valentine Boys series, with the spotlight shifting to Callum Valentine, the second to the youngest among the living Valentine brothers. If you've already read the first book, Herd That, then you already have an idea about what sort of connection Callum shares with Desidara (whose last name isn't mentioned in either of the two books), aka Desi, his oldest brother's girlfriend's best friend (say that really quickly ten times). Desi is divorced from a man who never deserved her and who, along with his girlfriend, make it a point to torment Desi whenever possible. She's unexpectedly rescued by Callum, and from thereon, they become a friendly twosome with a whole lot of amazing chemistry to boot. Desi isn't sure what to make of this man who makes it clear that he likes her just the way she is--a culinary and baking whiz with curves he wholeheartedly appreciates. For too long, she's rarely had that sort of acceptance in her life, save for her former father-in-law and her best friend, but with Callum by her side, Desi could be gaining a new family--the Valentines.
Callum and Desi's story was a much better read than that of Ace and Codie. This simply had a clearer direction, and it made for a far more entertaining and easier to follow read. Both Callum and Desi were so darn easy to like, and to see how far they had come from their circumstances--Callum with the family tragedy he and his remaining siblings lived through and Desi with her estrangement from her family and her divorce from her Mal Stevens--was quite inspiring. Aside from the romance, I found Desi's close ties to her former father-in-law, Malloy (not to be confused with her ex-husband whose full first name is Malden), to be the most endearing part of the story and I wish it had been delved into a bit more. Naturally, Callum's close-knit family makes appearances, making readers like me curious about the two other single brothers--Banks, who is Callum's fraternal twin and whose love interest is introduced in this book, and Darby, the youngest and the one who reveals something that shows that there's more to him than meets the eye. I enjoyed Crazy Heifer and cannot wait to read more from this author. Four stars. ♥
