Review: In for a Penny by Melissa Foster (The Whiskeys: Dark Knights at Peaceful Harbor #7.5)
Note: An advanced reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author.
Anyone who says a novella isn't quite as satisfying as a full-length novel seriously needs to do a whole lot more reading, and I highly recommend they start with Melissa Foster's newest addition to her Whiskeys: Dark Knights at Peaceful Harbor series. In for a Penny is, indeed, a novella, which makes it a pretty quick read, but don't judge this book on how many pages it happens to have. Foster has mastered the art of writing stories that are multi-layered and pack an emotional punch alongside delivering on the romance she's known for. She's done exactly that here, and dare I say that this is one of my favorites, not just in the series but from all the books of Foster's that I've read over the past few years?
In for a Penny is the story of Penelope Wilson and Scott Beckley, both of whom are established and beloved supporting characters in the Whiskeys: Dark Knights at Peaceful Harbor series. He works at the marina and she has her own ice cream shop. They were friends who become lovers, and in the two years they've known each other, there's a genuine care and concern that's developed into more since they began dating. But Scott doesn't think he can be the man that Penny deserves, not when she dreams of having a family and he doesn't, not when he fears he could become the person that he hates most.
This book was such a beautifully penned tale of true love--the love we have for a significant other and the love we have for family, both the ones we're born into and choose to surround ourselves with. Penny and Scott were already a couple going into this book, and that was one of my favorite things about it, because Melissa Foster has written this in a way that readers who are new to the series are able to get the back story on both Scott and Penny while also seeing how that affects them going forward. In short, you can easily read this novella without reading the seven full-length novels that came before it (but read them anyway because this series is awesome). In for a Penny went above and beyond my expectations. This brought a smile to my face and a tear to my eye. Five stars!
