Review: Forged by Sacrifice by LJ Evans (Anchor #2)

"I don't have my head on straight right now. I don't have the ability to convince you because all of the other shit going on in here." He tapped his head. "But this knows the truth." He tapped his heart.
He closed the remaining distance between us so he could gently rap on my chest. "And this knows the truth. Everything else is the lie, Georgie. Everything else is the senses and the dreams that you can't believe in. We're the reality."

I consider myself fortunate enough to have read all of LJ Evans's published books, and I can't help but feel proud to see how much she's grown as an author over the past couple of years since she released her debut novel. I loved her My Life as an Album quartet, but her ongoing Anchor series is in a class all its own. There's a newfound maturity to the two currently available novels that highlight Evans's talent for creating stories that don't "merely" give you the feels, but her characters and the journeys they find themselves on inspire readers, and THAT is a gift.

Forged by Sacrifice is the second novel in the Anchor series, and while it can be read independently of series starter Guarded Dreams, I do recommend that the books be read in order because there are recurring characters throughout the series. This is Macauley Whittaker and Georgie Astrella's story, with Mac leaving behind his career in the Navy and assignment in the Department of Defense in order to pursue his political dreams and fellow twenty-eight-year-old Georgie shifting from the salon's hustle and bustle to the renewed pursuit of a law degree.

Mac and Georgie have their hopes and ambitions, but sometimes, even well-thought-out plans need adjusting when other factors--say for example, love--come into play. This beautifully written love story reminds us that sometimes, events occur and people come into our lives and then old dreams are replaced with new--and better--ones. Forged by Sacrifice had romance in all its wonderful facets as well as some drama and intrigue balanced with much appreciated wit and humor. LJ Evans continues on her way to being an accomplished author. Five-plus stars. ♥
