Review: Beautifully Broken Spirit Catherine Cowles (Sutter Lake #3)

Note: An advanced reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author via Social Butterfly PR.

Catherine Cowles is back with the third novel in her Sutter Lake series, and this time around, it's a falling-for-your-best-friend's-sibling romance. Jensen Cole is a single mother who no longer believes in happy endings, not when she knows firsthand what heartbreak and disappointment feel like twice over. Her life is now focused on her nine-year-old son, Noah, and her business, The Tea Kettle. She may not be able to count on her instincts to tell her when a man is wrong for her, but she has her family...and her brother's best friend, Tucker Harris. Sure, Tucker may have a reputation for being somewhat of a ladies' man, but he's always been there for Jensen, their bond completely separate from his friendship with her brother. They've never been anything more than friends...until the day that they realize that the connection they share is one that demands to be explored. Will they finally take that chance?

This series continues to do well, with notably good storytelling from Catherine Cowles and a majority of main characters who capture your attention. I really liked Jensen and Tuck's story, and it almost feels as if they've been building up towards this from the get-go. Naturally, no matter how strong that connection may be between them, nothing comes easily to them as they make their way towards their happily-ever-after. There's the usual bit of angst and suspense as has been the case throughout the series, and the story pretty much went the way I expected it to. But while it follows a well-worn path, Cowles's writing is engaging and makes you want to keep turning the pages until you the end. With Beautifully Broken Spirit garnering 4.5 stars, I look forward to book four. ♥
