Review: Never Look Back by J.A. Essen (First Responders #2)

Note: This ARC was provided by Between the Sheets Promotions in exchange for an honest review.

Never Hold Back is the second book in the First Responders series from J.A. Essen and has a more suspenseful feel to it compared to its predecessor, When Sparks Fly. This is Rachel Upton's story and if you've read the first book, you'll recognize Rachel as Macy Hart's outrageous best friend. She's partnered here with Zander Brooks, a detective with the Santa Barbara Police Department, who was briefly introduced in the series starter. After Rachel survives a car accident that leaves her with a broken leg and other injuries, she meets the detective assigned to the case and there's an immediate attraction that goes on between the two of them. But as strong as the attraction may be, can Zander deal with the fact that the girl he's falling for is wealthy and can he save her when she's taken?

This was a better read than the book that came before it, but the abruptness that existed in book one is still very much present here in book two. These two flirt a lot and when they finally get around to actually having sex, it really is hot. However, there's this sudden shift from romance and erotica to mystery and suspense and it was like it was out of nowhere. I'm not saying either parts were bad. No, they were actually good. It's just that there was this disconnect between the two, and that's the one thing that's stopping me from giving this book a higher rating. However, I did like Rachel and Zander more than I did Macy and Seth. Okay, I liked Macy, but Seth went from an eight to a four because of the Robbie thing. Never Hold Back also has a better cover, so overall, this gets four stars. ♥
