Review: Undaunted by Ronnie Douglas (Knights in Black Leather #1)

Note: This ARC was provided by William Morrow Paperbacks via Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

The last thing Aubrey Evans needs is a distraction from her master plan. She's living with her grandmother temporarily but her ultimate goal is to return to her own hometown and the college that she really wants to attend. When she meets Zion and is attracted to the motorcycle-riding bad boy, she finds herself constantly looking for him when he's around and missing him when he isn't. However, as much as she's drawn to him, she's not into his MC background or the illegal things that his position as the MC president's right-hand man may entail. Will Aubrey stick to her master plan or will Zion get her to change it for him?

You know how you initially go into a book with a certain level of expectation because of the blurb that enticed you to read the whole thing? Well, suffice it to say that Undaunted, the first book in the Knights in Black Leather series from author Ronnie Douglas failed to meet any of my expectations. I was expecting a fair amount of drama, tension, and action, but the levels reached weren't sufficient enough to be even considered middling at best. The story and characters felt one-dimensional and I found myself desperately finding something that would spark my interest and get me to react positively. Alas, none was found.

It was difficult for me to believe that Zion, a patch-wearing member of a local motorcycle club and whose last name I don't recall being mentioned and if it was, I don't really want to go looking for it right now, would be willing to do what he did for female lead character Aubrey Evans. I mean, seriously?! He's part of a bad-ass MC and then he makes an offer just so this girl considers him worthy enough for her attention? Really?! They barely knew one another and I'm sorry but there was nothing about Aubrey that could inspire that kind of sacrifice. She was wishy-washy and even kissed Zion's cousin, for heaven's sake!

The book isn't terrible. Really, it isn't. I just had higher expectations, especially after learning that Ronnie Douglas is actually Melissa Marr. I wanted much more than I got and I'm sorry but there was simply no liking Aubrey. She was whiny and seemed to be all talk. Then there was Zion's cousin Noah, who would tell Aubrey that Zion was a trustworthy guy and then a couple of beats later, he would warn Aubrey about trusting Zion. Eh? What the heck?! Oh, and there was also another guy who had a thing for Aubrey but then he didn't...maybe. Everything about Undaunted just became overly muddled for me. Two stars. ♥
