Review: After Summer Ends by Katie Mettner

Note: This ARC was provided by Mark My Words Publicity via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

While many people look forward to the summertime, twenty-five-year-old English teacher Willow Erwin, summer is one season she wishes she could skip over. Her list of things she hates about summer is quite lengthy and there's nothing that's been able to make her change her mind...until she meets someone who opens her mind and heart to everything that Summer has to offer. Can the light and life that Summer brings weather the darkness and storms that Willow faces with the most meaningful Summer of her life?

After the Summer Ends is a standalone contemporary F/F romance from author Katie Mettner and while I've had books that lured me in with enticing covers and blurbs only to end up bitterly disappointed once the reading starts, this one matched its beautiful cover and attention-grabbing synopsis with an inspiring story of love, courage, and hope. Readers become part of the journey that Willow and Summer go on as they create an unlikely friendship based on acceptance, respect, and trust and discover a love all their own.

Willow and Summer are two women in their early twenties who have had their fair share of trying experiences. Willow doesn't let her proportionate dwarfism define her but she also has enough self-awareness to know when to ask for and accept assistance. On the other hand, Summer has a lot of insecurities, stemming from her own years spent in foster care and as a runaway. While Willow helps Summer realize that she's more than her limitations, Summer makes Willow see the beauty of the season.

Aside from the love story between Willow and Summer, the book highlights the love and support one gets from their family and that family isn't limited to those you share a bloodline with. There's also a meshing of faith and spirituality and the wondrous lessons imparted by American Indian beliefs and legends. This was a book that had a good cast of characters, with each one playing an important role in telling more than one story while keeping the main focus on Willow and Summer. After Summer Ends receives four stars. ♥
