Awaiting the result of wrongful termination suit, Emma Olson is out of options and is forced to apply for a job as a private nurse for William Richardson's ailing grandmother. She knows all about the nurses that have come and gone, each one barely making it after just a few days. Once she's got the job, she makes it clear to William that his sexually suggestive behavior needs to stop if he intends for her to take care of his grandmother. But Emma's curious about William and that curiosity may get the better of her in the end.
Altered Allies is a short story by Cat Waters, a known pseudonym of bestselling author Tara Sue Me. This is my very first read from Tara Sue Me, who just happens to be one of my youngest sister's favorite authors, and while this was a quickie read, it was one that was satisfying in terms of story line and main characters. Emma was feisty and upfront while William was a computer geek who had a proclivity for kinky sex. There's somewhat of a mutual interest but I certainly wouldn't label it an instant connection.
William came off as a tad obnoxious, especially when he was being sexually forward with Emma, but then there's another side to him that we clearly see when it comes to his grandmother. I think that Emma was a challenge of sorts because she wasn't the type to be ordered around, but her curiosity was more than enough for William to show her a thing or two. I would have want a deeper connection between them but I guess only so much can be done in a short story. Still, I enjoyed Altered Allies and am giving it four stars. ♥
