Review: Restless Shadows, Waiting Roads by Yolande Kleinn
Note: This ARC was provided by Less Than Three Press via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Caleb resisted the lure of the forest behind his home for years, adhering to the rules set by his parents for a young boy like himself. When he finally ventures into it, he is caught in a snowstorm and only finds refuge when he is rescued by a stranger named Eli. Soon after, Caleb and his family move away and Caleb proceeds to live a normal life yet still thinks about the forest and Eli over the years. It takes a decade and a half for him to return to the forest, and when he does, the stranger he had convinced himself was a figment of his vivid imagination all those years ago re-appears and Caleb's makes a life-changing decision.
Restless Shadows, Waiting Roads is a short story from author Yolande Kleinn and is one that carries with it fantastical imagery and a tale that captures the reader's imagination from the first word and holds on to it until the very end. The author's gift for storytelling is in full force and the fact that she was able to weave such a creative story with less than a quarter of the number of pages you would find in what are considered full-length novels proves she's someone worth keeping an eye on. In the real world, a bit of fantasy isn't an impossibility and all it takes is one person like Caleb to believe in the probability of it all.
Caleb is a main character that one can easily relate to, giving in to childhood temptations and being open to believing things that adults are prone to scoff at. Even as he grows up and begins to wonder if meeting Eli was nothing more than the effect of being trapped in the snowstorm, he never fully dismisses that one significant event in his life. There's an immediate connection between the two of them when they first meet and that connection was never really severed even when they were apart. I absolutely enjoyed every bit of Restless Shadows, Waiting Roads and liked that the ending was left open to possibilities. Five stars! ♥
