Review: Bad to the Bone by Wendy Byrne

Sammie Murphy heads to Key West, Florida as soon as she learns about her Uncle Jack's arrest on drug charges. The idea that the man who was more of her parent would be involved in anything drug-related was unfathomable and Sammie intends to do anything and everything to right what she believes is a terrible wrong. She's up against DEA Agent Enrique Santos who is the undercover agent who put together the case against Jack Murphy and is sure that arresting the man was more than justified. He suspects Sammie is involved in Jack's drug business, but the more he hangs around her, the more Enrique wonders if the case he believed was a slam dunk could more complicated and could cost him and Sammie their lives.

Bad to the Bone is a standalone romantic suspense novel from Wendy Byrne and is about a young woman who intends to prove that her uncle was wrongly accused and arrested but falls for the arresting agent who is in charge of her uncle's case. Sammie Murphy believes her Uncle Jack is innocent of the charges made against him, but she's finding it increasingly difficult to help, especially since he refuses to cooperate. On the other hand, Enrique Santos knows for a fact that Jack was selling and distributing drugs out of his bar and with Sammie's sudden appearance, he wonders how she's involved in the operation. He doesn't trust her and she doesn't trust him, but there's no denying the attraction that simmers between the two of them.

The suspense aspect of the story was interesting, considering I had someone pegged as the villain halfway through the book only to be caught unaware with the twist thrown in later on. I liked that Enrique was immediately suspicious of Sammie. After all, he's a DEA agent and he's not going to simply assume that she's some innocent woman wanting to clear her uncle's name. After everything was said and done though, I couldn't help but feel that Sammie and Enrique's romance was resolved too quickly and without much ado, which I find surprising considering the deception involved. I wanted it to play out a bit more or, at the very least, for Enrique to grovel. Still, Bad to the Bone was an entertaining read and I'm giving it 3.5 stars. ♥
