Review: Something Like Hate by Claudia Burgoa

Something Like Hate is the newest standalone romance from bestselling author Claudia Burgoa, and she delivers one heck of a deliciously witty enemies-to-lovers tale. Claire Solis is a superstar employee, but even superstar employees need a break from the daily grind of work. Her trip to Mexico has been planned and no last-minute calls from her boss will make her cancel. Of course, the last thing she expects is to find herself on the same flight as Emperor Palpatine, erm, Miller Archer, aka her boss's boss, the head honcho, the big cheese, and the overbearing man who thinks asking her to be his fake girlfriend while attending his sister's destination wedding is appropriate. But there's a reason why people say you should never cross the line between personal and professional. Maybe Claire expected better from the man she shared an unforgettable one-night stand with, but when a mistake at work is blamed solely on her, costing her everything she'd worked for? Well, let's just say there's another saying that Miller should have remembered, because hell hath no fury like a very talented former star employee scorned.
I loved, loved, LOVED how much of a kickass heroine Claire was! This was a woman who had a good head on her shoulders. She was smart, independent, and refused to rest on her laurels. I was totally behind her quest for revenge because I would have done the same thing had I been in her shoes. Was Miller a bad guy? Not entirely, but her utter dislike for him as her former employer was perfectly understandable. The back and forth between these two, along with all that tension, was highly addictive and oh-so-entertaining. As always, Claudia Burgoa does an excellent job keeping the story moving forward on an even keel and good pace. While Miller and Claire may have had a connection during that one-night stand, they did have the whole incident once they were back at work that got in the way and years of simmering dislike to fester on Claire's end. So, I liked seeing their relationship evolve from one-time lovers and former employer-employee to rivals with chemistry. Nothing was rushed nor forced, and all I had to do was sit back and enjoy the heck out of this romance. Something Like Hate gets five stars. ♥
