What Comes After is the follow-up to Ten Hours, both written by Melissa Toppen. I know the books have been mentioned as being standalones, and while Ten Hours can, indeed, by read on its own, I'm suggesting that you read the books in order. Yes, these are two different stories, however, what happens in the first book affects the male main character in both books. So, in my humble opinion, I do think reading these in order allows for a better understanding of why Abel Collins is the way he is when he meets Peyton Rivers in book two, What Comes Next.
When twenty-six-year-old Peyton Rivers meets twenty-nine-year-old Abel Collins, she not only notices how good-looking the man is, but also how cold he seems to be. But Peyton has no idea what Abel went through three years ago and how much he's changed since then. He knows all too well what true love is like, just as much as he knows what it's like to lose the person you offered your heart to. When she learns his story, she wants to help free him from the shackles of his past. She doesn't want him to forget what came before, but to welcome what comes after.
I absolutely fell in love with Abel Collins and Finley Roberts's story in Ten Hours, so expectations were definitely high for this companion novel. Yes, Abel isn't the same guy that he was in the previous book, but again, this is why I think reading both books is a good idea because then it becomes easier to empathize than criticize, but that's just me. Peyton wasn't a woman who wanted to replace Fin; rather, she wanted her own story with Abel, to show him that while happy endings aren't guaranteed, true love can happen more than once. 4.5 stars for What Comes After. ♥
