Review: Walk of Shame by Andrea Smith (G-Man, Next Generation #1)

I haven't had the opportunity to read and review author Andrea Smith's G-Man series, although I was able to buy the boxed set when it was on sale last year. Having said that, I was able to read and enjoy Walk of Shame, the first book in the spin-off series entitled G-Man, Next Generation. This story features the son of two main characters from the original series, but like I said, you can go into this book without having read the series prior to this one--although, if you're like me, you'll end up pushing the series up your to-be-read list in order to have the background stories of everyone who came before. Here we have Weston Matthews, a senior at Hardwick College and someone known for his prowess as a hockey player and a ladies man and makes no apologies for either, and Peyton Lang, an ambitious senior with a painful secret.

Weston and Peyton are the stars of this series starter, but I would be remiss if I didn't mention Penny Lane. Yes, like the Beatles song (which happens to be one of my favorites). She's Weston's tutor in American Literature, the one class Weston is failing. She's hard-nosed and doesn't let up on Weston, not at all affected by his good looks and charm. She may not be all that appealing physically, and her opinion of Weston may not be all that great, but there's something about her that intrigues him, especially after he realizes that someone who looks like her has an actual boyfriend. I won't go into too much detail, but Penny is key to Weston and Peyton's love story and how she ties in with them is one of the interesting things about the book, especially when you find out why she does what she does and her motivations for it.

This isn't a sappy new adult (NA) love story. There's drama and angst mixed in with the far more lighthearted moments. Both Weston and Peyton are far more complex main characters than you're led to believe, and their individual life stories are equally absorbing. This is a college romance and it's well-written one, and as the beginning of a series, I'm curious to see whose story will be up next and if each of the books will be tied together loosely or more substantially. I'm definitely going to be looking into the G-Man series, especially since Weston's parents, Easton and Darcy Matthews, sparked my interest here. If you're looking for something more than the usual fluffy, happy-dippy college romance, you may want to consider checking out Walk of Shame, book one in G-Man, Next Generation. It gets four out of five stars. ♥
