When Edward Russell crashes his luxury vehicle alongside a construction site, he finds himself being rescued by an angel with a hard hat. Soon, it becomes clear to Eddie that Aloysius Carver leaves up to his nickname by being a wish come true in spite of the twenty-year age difference between them. Wish's sadistic tendencies meshes perfectly with Eddie's masochistic needs. But as much as they get along in the bedroom, they have stark differences beyond it. Wish is already uncomfortable with Eddie's financial standing but an issue that will affect Lake Lovelace that has Eddie and Wish on opposing sides and Eddie's undeniable devotion to his best friend threaten to end their relationship. Will they be able to mend their differences and navigate the rough roads ahead or will they end up going in different directions after all?

Rough Road is the second book in the Lake Lovelace series from author Vanessa North and it finally gives Eddie Russell, the most memorable supporting character from the first book, Double Up, a chance to shine in the spotlight (because he sure as heck stole it every time he was around before) with Wish Carver. I quite enjoyed this love story between Eddie and Wish, one that began purely on a sexual connection but flourished over time. They've got their share of differences but it's those differences that force them to find a way to fit and work out whatever threatens to drive them apart. There's also a definite resolution with as far as Eddie's relationship with his best friend Ben Warren is concerned, especially since you can't help but wonder if Eddie really does harbor romantic feelings for Ben based on his actions in both books.

I do believe this is the first time I've encountered a story involving a sadist and a masochist and I found myself rather fascinated with how their relationship worked. This wasn't the usual dominant-submissive story though it did share a lot of the give and take elements as well as the need for trust and respect that are important to point out in relationships like this. Eddie's need for violence and Wish's need to provide it aren't fully delved into and I had hoped for a deeper look into both sides because they're important elements to what make them compatible as a couple. I did like that the story covers several months rather than just a few weeks and having familiar characters--Ben Warren, Dave Fox, Ridley Romeo, and Tina--and the culmination of Ben and Dave's relationship made Rough Road a worthwhile sequel. Four stars! ♥
