Review: The Bluff by Willa Nash (Calamity, Montana #2)
Note: An advanced reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author via Valentine PR.
Whether she writes under Devney Perry or her not-so-secret pen name of Willa Nash, this author never fails to get my heart absolutely invested in her characters and their story. The latest bit of evidence of my statement is the second full-length novel in her Calamity, Montana series. The Bluff is the story of Everly Christian and Reese Huxley. If you've read the series starter, The Bribe, you'll remember both Everly and Hux; having said that, you don't necessarily need to read one in order to fully appreciate or understand the other. However, allow me to encourage you to read the books in order because there's a life-altering event in the first book involving Everly and Hux's teenage daughter, Savannah.
They were nothing more than strangers sitting side by side at Calamity Jane one night, and one night together was all they had planned to have. But when artist and gallery owner Reese Huxley discovers that having a wife would help him in his fight for custody of his daughter, Savannah, former aspiring singer Everly Christian volunteers to help. Hux knows what he's getting out of the arrangement, and while he isn't entirely sure how Everly benefits from it, their sizzling chemistry certainly doesn't hurt. This is temporary, a fact Hux reminds Everly of each time he pushes her away. They spend more time together, but while they may be fooling everyone, for how long can they fool themselves?
Goodness, but how these two main characters put my heart through the wringer, especially in the last few chapters! Gah! There were times where I was so darn tempted to smack Hux upside the head and shake Everly so that they'd see sense for totally opposite reasons, but these two needed to figure things out on their own, and well, I had to sit back and wait. After all, I knew they were going to get their happily-ever-after, but my poor heart broke each time Hux kept Everly at a distance. And then there was the straw the broke the camel's back, and argh, I so wanted to scream at Hux. He did, however, redeem himself, and quite heartbreakingly and beautifully, I might add. Five stars go to The Bluff.
