Review: Jag by HJ Bellus (Diablo's Throne #2)
Note: This ARC was provided by the author via Enticing Journey Book Promotions in exchange for an honest review.
Jag is the second novel in the Diablo's Throne series penned by HJ Bellus, and takes place about a year after the epilogue in the series starter, Cruz. The eponymous main character was introduced in book one, but we get a bit of a better idea of the tormented childhood he had as José and how Dexter Diaz, aka Boss, changed his life by introducing him to the world of mixed martial arts and giving him what was missing in his life--family. Fast forward to Jag as an adult, and although he once had a shot at becoming an MMA champion, everything fell apart. In order to get back to fighting form, he knows he's going to have to overcome his past. When he and the waitress he's been fantasizing about begin a relationship, it's the start of something special for Jag and Sunni--that is, until old tormentors make their return. Slaying their respective demons could be the fight of Jag's life. Losing is not an option, not if it means losing the woman who gives him a purpose beyond the ring and a hope of a future together.
I had to browse through the first book to find out if Sunni was ever mentioned, even in passing; I didn't find anything. Having said that, it was a bit more difficult to see Jag and her have as strong a connection as they did here in the second book because it was never really established. That aside, I did like the back stories that both Jag and Sunni had. I had a better understanding of how Jag came to be a part of Boss and Layla's lives and why he was as close to them as he was. Then there was Sunni's, which was revealed much later in the story. Tying it in with the rival gym of Diablo's Throne felt a tad forced, and that, along with the rushed feeling of the relationship between Jag and Sunni had this book faltering, but overall, it was still an enjoyable enough read. I'm awarding Jag 3.5 stars. ♥
