Review: David: Beginnings by B.J. Smyth (David #1-#4)

Note: This ARC was provided by the author via Signal Boost Promotions in exchange for an honest review.

David: Beginnings is a collection of the first four stories in B.J. Smyth's David series, featuring the eponymous title character and his romance with the more worldly and wealthy Bradley. David is a gay man who may not have the most buff or most chiseled body around, but he knows how to have a good time, especially with friends. When he spies a good-looking man at a club--a man who makes it clear that he's noticed David just as much--it sparks the beginning of an unexpected relationship between the two. A hook-up that has both David and Bradley wanting more than either one could've prepared for. What follows is how they deal with the early stages of their romance.

This was a rather fun read for me, one that allowed me to get to know the main character a bit more with each new story. David was fun-loving but there was also a layer of insecurity that surrounded him, given that he wasn't all too sure why someone like Bradley would be interested in someone like him. Yes, they engage in more than their fair share of sex, but it wasn't just about that. David sees a side of himself that allows him to have more confidence and be even more invested in what he and Bradley are creating together. These two appear to have genuine feelings for one another, but it's early days, and I liked that the author is taking things slow but still sweet.

B.J. Smyth is a new-to-me author, but I did enjoy his writing in general and these stories about David and Bradley in particular. There were times when parts of the text did seem repetitive, but the fact that I liked all four installments outweighs that. I know there's already a Valentine addition to the series, but I haven't read it yet, and I saw that Smyth does have plans for even more stories for David and Bradley, so I'm looking forward to seeing where the author will be taking this couple next. Being the angst addict that I am, I'm kinda-sorta-maybe hoping they'll be dealing with some issues that, at the end, will strengthen their relationship. I'm giving David: Beginnings four stars. ♥
