Review: Saving Rafe by Jocelynn Drake (Lords of Discord #2)

Note: An advanced reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author via IndiGo Marketing & Design.

Tears slipped down Philippe's cheeks for Piper and his other lost clan members. He wept for the pain and fear the others were feeling.
And if he was being honest, he wept for himself and Rafe. He was falling for a man he knew he could never have.

From the moment I'd finished reading Claiming Marcus in October of last year, I knew that I had to put the next three books (I assumed there would at least be three more to come because there were four Varik brothers--Marcus, Rafe, Beltran, and Winter--but I certainly wouldn't mind of the author decides to go past the expected four novels. Hint, hint.) in Jocelynn Drake's Lords of Discord series on my to-be-read list. Saving Rafe, which is the newly released second book, is one of my most anticipated reads this year, and Drake made the wait worthwhile, thanks to an intriguing overarching story line of politics and a power struggle in the vampire world and the individual love stories of four brothers and the family that they all cherish and would fight to the death for. Consider me addicted!

To the most casual of observers, Rafe Varik is a genius when it comes to providing the public with places to entertain themselves once the sun sets. They see a hedonist who has no shame in encouraging others to follow suit and makes no apologies for not hiding who he is. To his brothers and the select few that are closest to him, they see the mischievous Rafe, the one who doesn't hesitate to speak his mind and push a button or ten. But what does someone like Philippe Arsenault see when he looks at Rafe Varik? Philippe has his reasons for requesting it be Rafe assisting the Arsenault clan in the search for a missing vampire, but while he may have heard of the devilishly handsome Varik sibling and Rafe is smitten by the angelic clan leader, neither is quite prepared for what is to come.

Vampires have always been my number one go-to when it comes to paranormal tales, regardless of the medium. Jocelynn Drake take on vampires in this paranormal romance series of hers has left me impressed twice over. Rafe and Philippe's story had the paranormal and the romance, but there was so much heart to it as well. Family and clan may be interchangeable to most, but in the Drake's vampire world, there are important distinctions, ones that Rafe and his siblings need to decipher as the desire to better protect those they care about grows. I loved seeing Rafe and Philippe's relationship progress and how they both turned out to be much more than they first seemed to be as individuals. I'm certainly looking forward to reading Bel's story next! Saving Rafe easily garners five-plus stars. ♥
