Review: Kickstart My Heart by Autumn Jones Lake (Kickstart #1)

Note: An advanced reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author via Wildfire Marketing Solutions.

Kickstart My Heart is my first read from Autumn Jones Lake, and it also happens to be the first in Lake's new Kickstart trilogy. This was originally published a few years back as part of the multi-authored '80s Mix Tape: A Romance Rewind Anthology, but has been expanded and updated. Set in 1989, we have Russell Adams, aka Chaser, who is the twenty-two-year-old son of a motorcycle club president and also happens to be part of a rock band on the rise. He meets Mallory Dove, a twenty-year-old aspiring actress who is actually Mallory DeLova, the daughter of the incarcerated head of the Russian mafia. Neither one was experiencing the other or the impact they would have in one another's lives, but once their paths cross, their hearts may not allow them to turn back.

This was a strong start to a new series as well as an introduction to this new-to-me author's writing. Having been in my mid-teens when this story took place, Autumn Jones Lake did a good job setting the scene. I also liked that the main characters, although still in their early twenties, have already led complicated lives, making me more curious as to how their respective backgrounds affect their present circumstances. You'd think all the different elements Lake has brought into play would make the story feel cluttered, yet everything was held together rather nicely, creating a multi-layered take and multi main characters. While this first book does end with a happy-for-now feel, there are issues that have yet to be resolved. Naturally, that just gives me something to look forward to with book two. I'm giving Kickstart My Heart 4.5 stars. ❤
