Review: Hooked on You by Kate Meader (Chicago Rebels #4)

Note: This ARC was provided by Simon & Schuster in exchange for an honest review.

Gah! I can't believe we've reached the end of the Chicago Rebels series! I've read my fair share of hockey romance series, but Kate Meader's stories about a fictional Chicago-based professional ice hockey team has become one of my all-time favorites. The series closes out with the one couple that's had a whole lot of sexual tension brewing from the moment Clifford Chase's three daughters became co-owners of the Rebels franchise--thirty-one-year-old team captain Bren St. James, who has two daughters, eleven-year-old Caitriona and nine-year-old Francesca, with his ex-wife, and twenty-four-year-old Violet Vasquez, the youngest among Clifford Chase's daughters. If you've followed the series, you're well aware of how Violet seems to be as much of an expert at pushing Bren's buttons as Bren is in avoiding that Puerto Rican sass that makes him oddly frustrated.

When Bren St. James and Violet Vasquez first met at the Empty Net, they didn't get off to the greatest of starts, not with Bren just having come out of rehab for his alcoholism and Violet just learning that she was a one-third owner of the Chicago Rebels. Months later, Bren has taken his two daughters to live with him while their mother has disappeared on them and is heartened by the support he gets from his team. He's got volunteers to watch Cat and Franky during his away games as the Rebels enter the playoffs in hopes of making it all the way to winning the Stanley Cup. When his younger daughter takes a shine to Violet, Bren surprises the woman he's thought of as flighty by asking her to be with his girls while the playoffs are ongoing. Spending time together has Bren seeing Violet in a new light, but is Violet brave enough to lay claim on a man who may later reject her?

I've been so looking forward to Bren and Violet finally getting their act together and doing something about all that pent-up attraction they've been keeping under wraps. Well, maybe more of Bren pretending it didn't exist since Violet sure wasn't hesitant to taunt and tempt the guy she's had her eye on from the moment she saw him in that bar. This was an enemies-to-lovers story that was both touching and enticing, highlighting not just the brewing romance between the two main characters but also the anchoring power of family, and not merely the one we're born into. Aside from Bren and Violet's romance, we also get snippets on the four other couples whose stories were part of the series and who they're all currently doing in their respective relationships. I'm sad to see this series end, but love that it ended on a high note with Hooked on You, which is getting five stars. ♥
