Review: Defied by Maria Luis (Blood #2)

Note: This ARC was provided by the author via Give Me Books Promotions in exchange for an honest review.

“Fuck,” he worked out after another bark of laughter, “you were made for me. I didn't laugh until you. Didn't see a glimmer of light withing all the darkness.” One big hand lifted from the steering wheel to run over the scruff along the bottom half of his jaw like he was embarrassed. “And now you've got me spilling my soul like I'm some sort of poet.”
I couldn't deny it—cliché or not, my heart fluttered at the awkward way he continued to glance over at me before quickly fixing his attention on the road again. Smiling, I offered up, “I don't mind poetry. Are you any good with haikus?”

Gah! This duet! My expectations going in to Sworn realistic yet hopeful. Maria Luis was a new-to-me author a couple of weeks ago, and while I was aware of the great reviews she's received for her past work, you never know how a book is going to affect you, especially if you've never experienced the author's writing before. Well, Luis knocked those expectations of mine out of the park, and now with the conclusion to her Blood duet, my expectations were understandably far higher. Guess what? Defied met every single one of them and then some.

The story picks up immediately after the events and the shocking ending of the first book. Where do Avery Washington and Lincoln Asher go once a life-altering tidbit is placed before them? These two did not exactly have sunshiny lives before they met each other, and neither were their outlooks one whatever prospective futures they had as individuals. But once their paths crossed, it was as if fate had intervened, and they were bound together, swearing to go against all challenges, working to defy even those who could crush them both.

I'd be hard-pressed to find one thing about this book--heck, about this duet as a whole--that I didn't like or appreciate. Avery and Linc were main characters that I wanted to get to know and became way more invested in their love story than I thought possible. The author's put together a story that was both engaging and interesting, and her writing had everything I could have hoped for in a romantic suspense novel. Sworn introduced Maria Luis to me; Defied guaranteed she was remain on my radar for the long haul. Five-plus stars. ♥
