Review: Jared's Evolution & Jared's Fulfillment by Riley Hart (Jared & Kieran #1-#2)

Note: These ARCs were provided by the author via Michelle Slagan in exchange for an honest review.

Riley Hart isn't a new-to-me author, having fallen in love with her Blackcreek and Broken Pieces series at the beginning of 2016. Since then, I've read several of her other books, as well as a few of her releases under her other name, Nyrae Dawn. So, I know what to expect when it comes to a Riley Hart novel...until she unleashed upon her fans and readers a brand new collection that pushed her into new territory. The Desires Unleashed collection kick off with the Jared & Kieran series, which is comprised of Jared's Evolution and Jared's Fulfillment. If you're expecting hearts and flowers and whole lot of fluff, prepare yourselves because while these two novels may have romance, they've got a whole lot more kink, and I'm not talking about mere spanking or tying of wrists either. This is erotica and it's the unapologetic kind, which I much prefer, thank you very much. The author and main characters owned these two books, and while kink in general or daddy kink in particular may not be everyone's cup of tea, do not doubt for a second that Hart gives the same quality of writing here she gives her previous releases.

This review is meant to cover both Jared's Evolution and Jared's Fulfillment. These books MUST be read in order because while book one does not end in an evil cliffhanger, it only gives readers a happy-for-now (aka HFN) ending and a number of unresolved issues. It's in the second book that the relationship between the main characters, thirty-three-year-old lawyer Jared Reynolds and forty-six-year-old psychologist Kieran MacAuley, neighbors turned sexual partners with domestic discipline as its primary focus, is tested and where both men find firmer footing as individuals...but do they find the same as partners? Yeah, sorry, I'm not going to give away the ending here. What I will say is that Jared and Kieran do get a happily-ever-after (HEA), but that doesn't necessarily mean that they find it together. Am I purposely being a tease, yanking your chain unnecessarily? Perhaps, but seriously, people, if you've yet to read either of these books, I don't want to be the one to spoil the reading journey for you. Suffice it to say that I'm seriously encouraging that you go into these two--in order!--with absolutely open mind and heart.

While this may not have been my first encounter with daddy kink and domestic discipline, I must confess that this was the first time that I had a far better appreciation for what both are about, and yes, they can be two separate things, not tied together. This wasn't just about sex for either man. There was something missing in both their lives, even though it may have seemed that it was Jared who had more to gain from the experience in the first book. Once you learn why Kieran tries to maintain some emotional distance from Jared, you have a more well-rounded understanding of what motivates him. In the beginning, I had my doubts with these two, both in terms of their compatibility and whether this was nothing more than lust masquerading as love. I should have known better. Riley Hart put whatever fears and doubts I had to rest and she not only had me falling for these two and what they shared, but now she's got me curious as to what she may have up her sleeve as this particularly decadent collection of hers evolves. For now, relish the awesomeness of Jared & Kieran, both books getting five stars apiece. ♥
