Review: Closer by Kylie Scott (Stage Dive #4.6)

Closer is the second novella in Kylie Scott's highly popular Stage Dive series and the sixth book released overall. Mae Cooper is a successful plus-sized model who finds herself in need of a bodyguard after receiving a package containing an animal heart with a knife through it from a stalker. When her friend Lena Harris calls on Stage Dive's head of security to get someone to watch Mae, Ziggy Thayer appears at Mae's door. The former Marine is no-nonsense and takes his job seriously. The threat is very real and Mae is definitely rattled--by both the faceless stalker and her hot shadow, aka her bodyguard. Ziggy is focused on the task at hand and is as professional as an ex-Marine and now-security detail can get. He's used to protecting a client and facing danger, but he never anticipated that the danger would be coming from Mae and the too real possibility of his falling for his curvy client.
After the four original full-length novels in her Stage Dive series, Kylie Scott's novellas in the same collection have an added element of suspense to them, although not to the point that I would necessarily consider them romantic suspense reads. I adored Mae and tip my hat off to her being a woman who knew what she wanted out of life and went after it. I also liked that she and Ziggy balanced each other out quite nicely. Speaking of Ziggy--whose name made me think of the eponymous comic strip and character who graced many a greeting card and stationery item--I loved that he was stoic and serious but had this sexier--and dirtier!--side to him because Ziggy and Mae together was a whole lot of steamy AND sweet. With Kylie Scott's two novellas having male main characters who provide private security, would it be too much to hope for a possible romantic suspense series in the making with more bodyguards? Maybe? Wishful thinking? Fingers crossed! Closer snags four stars and may be read as a standalone. ♥
