Review: Her by Britney King

You pretty much know what you're going to get when you pick up a Britney King-penned novel. No, I'm not talking about being able to predict what happens in the story or to the characters; it has more to do with recognizing that you’re not getting a run-of-the-mill romantic suspense read. More often than not, there’s very little in terms of actual romance, at least as far as the King books that I have read are concerned. Her stuff deservedly fall under the psychological thriller genre because you get the thrills and chills while everything about the book is totally messing with your head. We’re talking about pure, unadulterated mindfuckery here, and King is the reigning Queen.

The author’s latest release is entitled Her, and while the story is told mostly from the point of view of Sadie Hightower, we get snippets from “Her”, whose identity shall remain a mystery for the duration of this review, but suffice it to say that when it was revealed in the book, I may have gasped out loud…and cussed. There was definitely some cussing involved. But yeah, back to Sadie, the woman whose envy may have gotten the better of her. What she wants is simple enough: she wants her neighbor’s perfect life. Ann has it all: the perfect husband, the perfect children, the perfect house. Her one imperfection? One dark secret that could prove perfect for Sadie’s picking.

I’ve purposely made details of the book as vague as possible. After all, when it comes to this author’s work, you want to be able to experience everything as it happens, and spoilers really do wreak havoc on your overall reading experience. What I can point out is that this book threw me for a loop and had me wondering if reading it a second time will make clues I had missed more obvious. Britney King knows what she’s doing and I think she gets a perverse sort of thrill knowing she has countless readers gripping their e-readers tightly, trying to figure what the hell is going on and getting it mostly wrong. But like an addict, I keep coming back for more. Five stars for Her. ♥
