Review: The Devil's Advocate by Ashley Jade (Devil's Playground #2)

Note: An advanced reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author via Candi Kane PR.

“Look me in the eyes and tell me you don't love me.”
Saying the words will only make things worse.
If we had a chance at a future. If I could change the past...I'd tell her. Hell, I'd scream it at the top of my lungs.
But we don't.
We never will.

If I thought The Devil was dark, The Devil's Advocate was pitch-black. Okay, maybe not like a demonic or diabolical sort of dark because this was still very much a romance, but the dark elements certainly took me by surprise--and here I was thinking I was all prepared for whatever Ashley Jade threw my way with this second and final book in her Devil's Playground duology. I'm highly recommending that the books be read in order because they are very much connected and the novella does lay the groundwork for why everything plays out the way it does in the novel. We've got the same three main characters--Cain Carter, Eden Williams (I'm guessing her last name is Williams because it was her late mother's but I could totally be wrong), and Damian King--and things get...darker.

As was the case with my review for The Devil, I'm holding off on mentioning more details than necessary. I signed up to review this more than a couple of months ago, so when I started reading The Devil's Advocate, I had completely forgotten what the blurb for it had been. However, that didn't leave me feeling lost, especially since I did read the novella, so I did have an iota of an idea where the story may be headed. But again, like I mentioned, there was a lot about this book that took me by surprised, to the point that I felt rather gobsmacked at the turn of certain events. However, I do think that how everything was resolved was how it should be, and that everyone got what they deserved. Kinda-sorta-maybe cryptic, right? Unfortunately, I'm going to have to leave at it that and simply invite you to venture forth and meet the Devil...themselves. *wink* Five-plus stars for The Devil's Advocate. ♥
