Review: Sweet Mercy by Nina West (Dirty Empire #1)

Note: An advanced reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author via InkSlinger PR.

Sweet Mercy is my introduction to Nina West's writing, and it also happens to be the first novel in her new Dirty Empire series. Let me get this out of the way: yes, this ends in an evil cliffhanger, and yes, I am quite frustrated because waiting is just torturous. Not that I was surprised by the cliffy considering this is a series, and well, when I call a cliffy evil, it has a lot to do with the fact that I was really into the story and wanted more immediately, but I don't always get what I want so...there. Obviously, West has my attention, her newest story has my interest, and her main characters have my investment, and by that I mean my emotional investment. Have mercy on my heart!

Visiting a parent in prison is difficult enough, but knowing that he isn't guilty of the crime he was convicted of has twenty-five-year-old Mercy Wheeler even more worried. She wishes she could find some way to protect her father from anyone and everyone behind bars, knowing that he wouldn't fare well. Mercy should have been careful what she wished for because now someone has his eye on her and he knows just how desperate she is to protect her father. Twenty-nine-year-old Gabriel Easton's father is in prison as well, and Gabriel and his brother have taken the reins in the interim. He assures Mercy he can protect her father; that is, in exchange for one week of her in his bed.

Gabriel and Mercy have chemistry in spades, and with Mercy not exactly thrilled at being pressured to accept a deal like the one Gabriel made with her, sparks flew everywhere. I loved the push and pull between them, living up to the tension that I was hoping they would have. Mercy was no pushover, and Gabriel has met his match in her, and these two made for a hell of a lively couple. Sweet Mercy had a lot to offer and then some--from a well-written story to well-developed characters to the sort of build-up that has you itching to get your hands on the second book. See why I said that ending was evil? No idea when book two will be out, but I, for one, can't wait! Five stars. ♥
