Review: Paper Fools by Staci Hart (Hearts & Arrows #1)

Note: This ARC was provided by the author via Social Butterfly PR in exchange for an honest review.

Paper Fools is the first novel in the Hearts & Arrows series from Staci Hart. It's a reworked version of Deer in Headlights, which the author originally released in February of 2013. Greek mythology plays heavily in this book, and while I don't think you'll necessarily need college units on the subject, I do believe some working knowledge about the Greek gods and goddesses--especially those who top-bill the series, namely, Aphrodite, Apollo, and Persephone--and their lives and who they were mainly paired up with will help somewhat. This was like having two separate stories that are kinda intertwined, so prepare to be inundated by a packed cast of interesting characters.

The gods and goddesses are bored, so a challenge is made in order to keep themselves entertained. Who best to become their pawns than the lowly humans who litter the earth? Aphrodite and Apollo pin their hopes on Lex and Dean, respectively. She's in a relationship with the drummer of the band Dean belongs to. There's an instant attraction between the two, but Dean holds himself back, refusing to cause any friction within his band, the Paper Fools. But his connection with Lex is unlike anything he's ever had with anyone else before. How much are Dean and Lex willing to risk for a chance at true love; how far will the gods go to make sure they win in the game of love?

The idea behind having mythical gods and goddesses involving themselves in the affairs of the heart of humans is an interesting concept, and it's one that's been done before. In Paper Fools, the back and forth between Dean and Lex and the rest of the humans and Aphrodite, Apollo, and the all-too-powerful Greek gods and goddesses proved to be a tad distracting. I think it would have been a good idea for one story to take precedence over the other instead of both trying to vie for top spot. I've read a couple of other Staci Hart books before and have enjoyed them immensely. While Paper Fools isn't a favorite of mine, it's one you may be interested in giving a try. 3.5 stars. ♥
