“Don’t shut me out.”
“Not trying to shut you out. I swear to fucking God, it’s never been about not trusting you.”
“When did it become you against the world instead of us?”
“I’m afraid.”

I read and enjoyed Dahlia Donovan’s Sin Bin series earlier this year, but her new romantic suspense standalone is a cut above the rest. One Last Heist is the story of the Ueda-Eastons, Gregor Tempest Mackay and Toshiro, or simply Mack and Toshi. Having met while in primary school and promptly falling in love as teenagers, their lives have been intertwined for decades. On the outside, they may seem like nothing more than a well-off, ordinary couple living a more than comfortable life in London, but only those closest to them know about their history of theft. Yes, Mack and Toshi were thieves, and not your run-of-the-mill kind either. They were masters in the field, but Mack’s failing eyesight due to a hereditary condition may be the signal for them to finally retire and simply enjoy their lives together however they please. One last heist is all they’ve signed up for, but it proves to be far more complicated than either of them ever considered. When the number of people they thought they could trust dwindles, Mack and Toshi will have to stay steps ahead to unravel the conspiracy that threatens them and their loved-ones.

Gah! I loved reading this book. It had me hooked from the first chapter to that very Mack and Toshi ending. Well-paced and consistently intriguing, this standalone was a fun read with lighthearted witticisms and humor interspersed with the always present mystery and occasional bits of heaviness, courtesy of Mack’s deteriorating eyesight and reticence in seeking medical advice. These two were already very much in love and committed to one another from the beginning of the book, and surprisingly enough, I didn’t need a whole lot of history as to how they fell for each other. It was simply a given, and their interactions reiterated just how much they love and supported each. Mack and Toshi were a team, whether as husbands or as master thieves. Of course, there were the supporting characters who brought a whole lot of additional flavor to a fantastic story. Notice how I didn’t give away too much in terms of story line? When it comes to romantic suspense books, I try to refrain from mentioning details, especially when it’s a journey worth experiencing alongside the main characters. One Last Heist gets five-plus stars. ♥
