Review: Knotted by Pam Godwin (Trails of Sin #1)

Note: This ARC was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Oh my. Pam Godwin has just managed to leave me gobsmacked yet again with her latest novel, and the best part about it is that it's the first in a series but it doesn't end in a cliffhanger. Yes, Knotted is the first in the author's new Trails of Sin trilogy, and if you think that it's a cowboy love story with Godwin's patented brand of dark romance, you've got another thing coming. Don't let the young adult (YA) feel fool you in the first few pages of this book. This is very much a Godwin-esque novel, and it is most definitely not meant for those in the YA crowd. I also feel the need to mention that there may be triggers for some readers, specifically when it comes to the main female character being raped by two perpetrators while her boyfriend, brother, and boyfriend's brother are forced to witness. Again, this is dark romance with kink and a kick, Pam Godwin style.

On her sixteenth birthday, Conor Cassidy knew her life was going to change, but not in the way it did. She's sexually assaulted and the three boys who were closest to her were made to watch: her boyfriend Jake Holsten, his twin brother Jarret, and her older brother Lorne. They make a pact, one that seals all their fates and those of others unknowingly. Soon after, she was forced to leave the life she had in Oklahoma behind. Two years later, she returns only to be rejected by Jake, Jarret, and Lorne, and she once again leaves the only place she's considered home. It takes five years for her to find her way back, and only because the time has come for them to fulfill the pact. But now that she's back, Jake has no intention of letting her leave his side again. He knows he owes her an explanation, but doing so may cause new wounds before he can ultimately heal all of her old ones.

This was nothing like I expected it to be, but when it comes to this author's books, it's usually best to set aside any and all expectations except for one: that you're in for one hell of a well-written ride. Conor is an immensely strong woman who's been through hell. I can't go into too much detail as to why everything plays out the way it does for all four of the primary characters in the Trails of Sin series. I seriously don't want to spoil it for anyone, but what I can say is that Conor and Jake DO get their happy ending here. The second book is about Jarret, and the third one will be about Lorne, so there are no cliffhangers. While there are major things that are resolved in this first book, there are a few more loose ends waiting to be tied. If the rest of the series is as good as this starter, I'll be a happy and satisfied camper. Knotted is another five-starred piece of Pam Godwin magic. ♥
