Review: From Ashes to Flames by A.M. Hargrove (West Brothers #1)

From Ashes to Flames is my third read from A.M. Hargrove and it's the first novel in her brand new West Brothers contemporary romance series. This story has forty-one-year-old single father, widower, and physician Grey West who hires twenty-six-year-old Marin McLain to be the nanny to his two children, seven-year-old daughter Kinsley and ten-month-old son Aaron. He's arrogant and seems to be irritated by Marin's very presence. He expects things to be done a certain way and for it to be done to his satisfaction. If she were the type to easily be chased away by men like Dr. West, Marin would have upped and handed in her resignation on day one. But she recognizes just how much he needs help with Kinsley and Aaron, and when she finally learns his secrets, she has a better understanding of the man that he is. She starts to see him in a whole new--softer--light, but with that change comes the shifting of her own feelings for the him. But nothing can ever happen between the two of them. He's her boss and she's his kids' nanny. If they become involved, the fall could be one Marin never recovers from.

The decade and a half age difference between Marin and Grey was one that I liked mainly because Marin was in her mid-twenties and not some teenager on the cusp of adulthood. That being said, however, there were moments wherein she certainly acted like she was younger and far less matured than she should have been. Then there was Grey who tended to toe the line between being cool (and not in a good way) and cold, making it difficult to not just like him but to want to get to know him beyond his being a widowed father to two small children. By the end, however, I did like these two and how they were together. Although, if I'm being totally honest here, it was the two kids who stole my heart and who made this an even more heartrending read. With everything that played out prior to Marin becoming a part of Grey and the children's lives to everything that happened from there on in, angst was front and center. Of course, me being the angst addict that I am appreciated this, and somehow it fit in rather perfectly in a story like this one. Four-starred From Ashes to Flames was a notable start to the West Brothers series. ♥
