Review: Clay White by Kim Fielding (Bureau #2)

Note: This ebook was provided by the author via Other Worlds Ink in exchange for an honest review.

Clay White is the second novella in Kim Fielding's Bureau series, and while it can be read separately and could probably work as a standalone, it does include Charles Grimes and Tenrael from the series starter, Corruption, so I'm going to recommend that you read the books in order for a more satisfying reading experience. While Charles was an active agent in the first book, the titular character in this second book is a former agent with the Bureau of Trans-Species Affairs, but that doesn't stop him from delving into the suspicious deaths of young men in San Francisco. While at a club, he's drawn to Marek, who Clay immediately recognizes as a vampire. The two may share a connection, but they're also both hoping to find whoever's behind the rash of killings. Clay may need help to figure this case out, but the most disturbing thing he may uncover is how the real monsters may be all too human.

Once again, the author did a great job taking a huge chunk of this story in a direction I didn't see coming at all. I liked Clay's back story because it highlights his motivation for investigating the killings. Just like Charles before him, there's a darkness to Clay, and when I mean "darkness", I don't necessarily mean "evilness". Both men have experienced what it's like to cause the death of others, and in more ways than one. You'll get what I mean when you read the book. Clay and Marek's interaction was limited to just a lone interlude yet the connection proved to be strong enough for everything that unfolded afterwards. Admittedly, one of my favorite things about this book was seeing Charles and Ten once again, and they weren't in the story for mere decorative purposes so bonus points for that. While I liked Corruption more, I remained quite entertained by Clay White and it garners four stars. ♥
