Review: Licks by Kelly Siskind (One Wild Wish #3)

Note: This ARC was provided by the author via Social Butterfly PR in exchange for an honest review.

“It's just us now, Gwen. We come before everything. That's how we'll make it work.”
“I can do that.”
“Don't freak out on me.”
“Don't flirt with groupies.”
“Don't sleep with my brother.”
I gasped, and his lips quirked to the side. “Too soon?

I discovered Kelly Siskind's writing by way of her debut novel and she quickly became one of my favorite go-to authors halfway through her first series. Dare I say that her second series, One Wild Wish, has raised the bar even farther, and the series ender, Licks, is quite possibly Siskind at her best. This was a second-chance romance that was in a class all its own, thanks to an original story and two main characters that didn't waste more time than they already did while they had been apart with needless blame games or dismal wallowing and self-flagellation.

Gwen Hamilton is the girl that August Cruz's most famous songs are about. Every single one of those hate songs that his fans could sing word for word at the drop of a hat. They were best friends for years, neither one aware that the other's feelings went beyond the platonic. And then everything changed on Gwen's nineteenth birthday. Nearly nine years later, August unexpectedly shows up with a little over thirty-six hours to spare before Gwen's birthday. She broke his heart years ago, and as much as he still loves her, will all his anger lead him to breaks hers?

There isn't any grand revelation that's bound to crush the reader's heart because we're all very much aware of what it is that one of the main characters is keeping from the other, but it's that awaited confession that we know is coming that has us eagerly anticipating the manner in which it's brought out into the open. But in as much as this is a love story, it's also a tale about family--the kind we're born with, the one we grow up with, and the one we ultimately create for ourselves. Kelly Siskind's seamless mix of these elements made Licks a five-plus-starred read. ♥
