Review: My One Night by Carrie Ann Ryan (On My Own #1)

After reading the prequel novella, I had a feeling On My Own was a series that was going to own me. The series starts off with Dillon Connolly, youngest among the Connolly brothers. If you're a fan or reader of Carrie Ann Ryan's, then you'll remember the Connolly boys from the Fractured Connections series. Having said that, you don't necessarily need to read those books in order to enjoy or understand what's happening in My One Night, the first On My Own novel. This series has a whole new set of main characters and also has a more new adult or college romance feel to it, given that Dillon and his four roommates all happen to be college students sharing rent in one large house.

My One Night finds twenty-year-old Dillon Connolly getting used to life away from his brothers and sisters-in-law. They may only be a thirty-minute drive away, but Dillon appreciates the independence even that short distance offers him. His main focus is keeping his grades up in order to go from a partial scholarship to a full ride. After a very short-term relationship, Dillon isn't looking for another commitment. So, when twenty-year-old Elise Hoover approaches him to ask for a kiss, he's surprised. One kiss leads to a one-night stand, and one night has them both hoping for more. Elise slowly becomes another bright spot in Dillon's life, but could the darkness of his past snuff that light out?

When Carrie Ann Ryan wrapped up her Fractured Connections series, I held out hope that Dillon would get his own happily-ever-after in the future. AND HE DID!!! I loved seeing the journey that Dillon went on as he found his own footing and figured out his place in the world. There was no denying how much he was loved by his family--and by that, I mean his brothers, sisters-in-law, and the rest of the people at the Connolly Brewery--but he also needed to believe that he deserved it all. Being with someone like Elise was something necessary in his life, and accepting that he was worthy of her love and everything good in his life is what made My One Night a read worthy of its own five stars.
