Review: Loving You is Easy by Wendy S. Marcus (Loving You #1)

When teacher Brooke Ellstein first reaches out to soldier Shane Develen, it's through a letter sent as part of a pen-pal initiative between civilians and enlisted military personnel. In a matter of months, they grow closer and develop feelings of more than friendship. When an intimate photo of Brooke's in Shane's possession being stolen by a fellow soldier and posted online, leading to Brooke's reputation torn to shreds and accusations of questionable behavior with her students and Shane showing up to offer his help. But the Shane that's come to her rescue is very different from the one in the letters and the one she met while on leave. He's still reeling from his devastating injuries suffered during an RPG attack and the loss of his friends. She knows convincing him they're meant to be won't be easy, but she believes he'll be worth it.

Loving You is Easy is the first book in the Loving You contemporary romance series from author Wendy S. Marcus and is about twentysomethings Brooke Ellstein and Shane Develen and the struggles they face and try to overcome in order to get their happily-ever-after. Brooke and Shane have different family backgrounds, which he believes proves they shouldn't be together. When he loses an eye and badly injures one leg during his last deployment, the more he feels that he has nothing to offer the girl he's fallen for. Shane's attitude is perfectly understandable, what with the post traumatic stress disorder he's experiencing, though I'm not saying that every behavior is excusable. I simply get that most of the time, he couldn't control his actions because he had yet to seek help that he so obviously needed to deal with PTSD.

Shane was someone that I didn't pity but I did sympathize with what he was going through. Returning after several deployments and having been discharged due to injuries sustained--injuries he's forced to live with for the rest of his life along with horrific memories left by war--is no easy feat. Brooke appeared to be more than willing to be the counter-balance that he needed, especially when things got tough. I liked both of them, though there were times that I was confused with Brooke's actions. She would say one thing yet act in complete opposition to what she just stated (i.e. their time together in the hotel room). But I did enjoy the overall story and how everything, more or less, played out. I would have liked getting more than a glimpse at the letters they exchanged though. Loving You is Easy was a good 4.5-starred series starter. ♥
