Review: Here with Me by Samantha Young (Adair Family #1)

Note: An advanced reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author.

Bestselling author Samantha Young has a new series, and she kicks off the Adair Family series with a bang. Here with Me is the story of connections and reconciliation. There's romance as well as mystery and suspense, and Young offers readers all this with the enchanting Scottish Highlands as its backdrop. The Ardnoch Estate is found there, and its tranquility belies dark secrets that threaten its owner, Lachlan Adair. The former actor and leading man has left behind the trappings of Hollywood, but peace eludes him. When Robyn Penhaligon makes her way to Ardnoch Estate from Boston, it's in hopes of mending fences with her estranged father, Mac Galbraith. His abandonment is something she's never understood nor been able to forgive. A hurdle, however, comes in the form of Lachlan. The man simply grates on her nerves, and the feeling is rather mutual. As much as she would rather leave and cut her losses, Robyn stays on to help Mac as he struggles with what's happening on Ardnoch Estate. And staying means being around Lachlan constantly.

Intrigue and romance come together for what turned out to be a strong start to the Adair Family series. Samantha Young has taken the enemies-to-lovers trope and made it into the sort of read that keeps your attention from start to finish. Robyn and Lachlan were fantastic main characters, both flawed and enigmatic, which is why seeing them evolve from who they were when they were introduced in the first few chapters to who they became by the end of the book feel like emotional investment had paid of in spades. As is the case when it comes to this particular trope, I look for the back and forth between the characters, and Young certainly did not disappoint. This was also a great series starter for two reasons: the entertaining story line for Robyn and Lachlan (and Mac), and the introduction of a cast of characters that I look forward to getting to know more of as Young continues the series. Lachlan has set the bar high, so let's see what his siblings have to offer as each book is released. All in all, Here with Me left me feeling very much satisfied and gets 4.5 stars.
