Review: The Fall We Fell by Victoria Denault (Ocean Pines #1)

Note: An advanced reader copy (ARC) was provided by the author.

Victoria Denault's got a new series--her first that's self-published--and it's off to a strong start. The Fall We Fell is the beginning of the author's Ocean Pines series, set in the fictional small town by the same name. This had more of a falling-for-your-best-friend's-sibling (or alternatively, falling-for-your-sibling's-best-friend) feel to it rather than an enemies-to-lovers thing since the male main character, Jake Maverick, never considered the female main character, Terra Hawkins, an enemy. All that being said, this is, at its core, a story about first loves, first heartbreak, friendship, family, and yes, a small town.

Over the years, Jake Maverick's become part of the Hawkins family--the unofficial son of Terra's parents and a brother and best friend to her older brothers. Terra, however, never quite saw him in a brotherly light, but when he rejected a fourteen-year-old Terra, it's a rejection she carries with her for the next eleven years. When Jake returns to their hometown of Ocean Pines to take the job of lieutenant at the local fire station, he does it after distancing himself over the past three years. Now, he's ready to make a play for the girl he's loved for years. But it seems that she's moved on. Jake's prepared to give her his heart and a kidney, even if all Terra can ever offer him is a second chance at friendship.

This book had a lot of my must-haves when it comes to a romance read. There was chemistry between the main characters, a satisfactory bit of wit, an entertaining amount of snark, and a dash of angst. It also succeeds as a series starter because it offers up a great romance while also introducing readers to this small town of Ocean Pines and a cast of characters that I'm sure I'm not the only one intrigued about. I was curious, though, as to whether or not Declan, the eldest among the Hawkins siblings, already had a book out since he was already married to Nova. Victoria Denault's previous series and her most recent standalone, which was my first read from her, were all sports romances. Either way, I look forward to more from this new series. Four stars go to The Fall We Fell.
